Here are some of the options the photographer could’ve used: Don’t shoot outside at noon on a sunny day (morning/evening instead) move to a shadowy area, increase exposure diffuse the sunlight, in this case for a group photo you need a huge diffusion panel use a reflector to fill in the shadows use lighting to counter the sun Or any combination of the above.
