  • The censorship thing is solidly the US’s fault (sorry) and a very different conversation than what’s happening here. Though I’m sure it has it’s roots in backwards '40s orientalism at some point, we were really good at exporting that.

But like, from an outside person that interacts with japanese institutions in the ‘adult content’ sphere, they go way beyond what is mandated whenever anything international is involved. This article alone highlights how they won’t even say why they’re doing things, they’ll just vaguely blame it on nonspecific policy requirements and continue to restrict funds / obstruct shipping / deny visas / etc. It’s maddening to deal with.

  • … Is this a bit? Because thats some unhinged shit to believe if you’re being serious.

Just to be clear here, Putin isn’t responsible for all the worlds evils, that’s just… well, dumb. Sorry but like, who in their right mind could believe that? Seriously, I don’t know how you could possibly arrive at that conclusion.

And hell, he’s not even responsible for all the evils in the US. But he’s very openly and publicly working with the far right parties here, who are in their turn very open about working with him, and that makes him a very relevant current figure. Not… sure what part of that is a revelation.

  • As a prof, it’s getting a little depressing. I’ll have students that really seem to be getting to grips with the material, nailing their assignments, and then when they’re brought in for in-person labs… yeah, they can barely declare a function, let alone implement a solution to a fairly novel problem. AI has been hugely useful while programming, I won’t deny that! It really does make a lot of the tedious boilerplate a lot less time-intensive to deal with. But holy crap, when the crutch is taken away people don’t even know how to crawl.

  • Fun fact: This is pretty much a myth! There is only one case of a prion disease being transmitted via cannibalism in humans - Kuru. It’s only contracted by consuming the brain matter of an infected individual, and it’s only ever occurred in one group - the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, who practiced funerary cannibalism. It’s been eradicated since 2009.

The danger of contracting a prion gets trotted out all the time as justification for cannibalism being bad/wrong, and it just isn’t a factor. The truth is that human cannibalism is, except for one single (and incredibly tragic, so many child deaths resulted from this freak outbreak) instance, fine. And avoiding the consumption of brain tissue mitigates even that one impossibly rare risk.

  • Well I suppose that answers that. They got picked up by Microsoft/Xbox Games, IP rights included, which is pretty kickass to hear. Hopefully Microsoft continues to be just middling evil towards their studios and obsidian can actually do what they’re good at. Seems like they’ve had enough dev time on this / grounded that they might actually be allowed to, you know, make good content…

Macs have a decent terminal + CLI interface built in, and decent hardware. Also, for many years apple offered huge discounts for students through their university, so many CS students got a macbook for super cheap and just never stepped out of the ecosystem.
