alternative meme (replaced due to poor reception)
Thesis summary by @Altofaltception@lemmy.world:
The difference I think between the right and left is that the right would take joy from the suffering of the left.
Most people on the left would be sad if we lost Florida (or anywhere else really) as a result of climate change.

that’s a fair analysis.
me personally i don’t celebrate when homophobes are genocided in Gaza nor when republicans are unhoused in Florida. but given the downvotes on this post, i am clearly in the minority and i find this unsettling.
You’re getting downvoted because it’s incoherent and shitty. It looks like a parody of boomers trying to be funny, but without a punchline.
I see no incoherence there. I totally got the point. It is literally what the GOP will do to Floridans when sea level rise hits them hard. The meme is not funny nor do I see any attempt at humor and it is 500% on point. The events described by that meme absolutely WILL happen.
at first i thought i was wording the post in an offensive way or something and was trying to figure out how to fix it
but now i genuinely think a significant chunk of lemmy just fucking hates floridians for no reason but dogmaticsm
I won’t be laughing when this happens to Florida. If for no other reason than enlightened self-interest: sea levels rising will compact the country’s population into smaller and smaller areas, creating even more overcrowding and competition for housing. Skyrocketing rents will be the first consequence. When this happens to Florida, it will happen to absolutely everyone.
skyrocketing rents will be the first consequence
you are more correct than maybe you know. skyrocketing rents already are the first consequence. due to markets being prospective, properties that are at higher elevation are already disproportionately gaining value.
One time where I hate being right…
updated; assuming you are here in good faith please let me know what you think
I think you’re right, I struggle to find the joke.
that’s literally the joke is that there is no joke. people are laughing at people’s suffering for purely ideological differences yknow? the laughter is inappropriate, an overreaction to something that is not funny at all.
it’s not a joke so much as just depressing.
that said i don’t know that this meme was particularly effective on rhetorical fronts, so i apologize that this was confusing and i don’t blame you. i’d try to edit the meme and do better, unfortunately it’s difficult for me to analyze exactly where i went wrong because of this bad anti-minority sentiment being prevalent on lemmy; all the feedback im getting is hopelessly intertwined with the exact ideological self centeredness i am seeking to address.
Yeah, but then its not a meme, right? Dunno, i aggree, but its just not funny to me.
thanks and yeah i’d call it antihumor maybe?
and plenty of the memes posted here aren’t funny in the traditional sense anyway, example
appreciate u engaging with me on a genuine level 👍
Sure, i just gave my opinion ^^ the one you linked is also not really that funny, but it feels less butthurt I guess? Dunno how to phrase it ^^
I try (and sometimes fail) to do that on the internet, thanks for appreciating :)
suggest an alternative format and/or wording and i’ll gladly replace it.
im very open to admitting changes to my own content as i am an imperfect individual.
Don’t worry buddy, you’re not alone. My community includes people I don’t agree with or like. Just because they’re self righteous assholes doesn’t mean we should celebrate their misery. Hell I’m sure there’s a lot of wildlife at risk of losing life and habitat as well. Moral of the story is: bad things are bad, and everybody should try and be a little empathetic every now and again.
thanks buddy
Sure thing pal!
My ethics in a nutshell
real
You’re being downvoted for making generalizations.
The disappearance of Florida wouldn’t be objectively good. Overall, it would be bad. The perceived optimism isn’t a response to the overall change; it’s a response to certain presumed consequences, like 1. Republicans will finally have to admit climate change is real. 2. Red states will no longer be close to 50% of electoral votes.
Now, you might be thinking “how dare you get political in the face of lives and homes lost!”
And to that, I say, whose fault is it that lives and homes are being lost? Whose fault is it that corporations have degraded the atmosphere thusly? Whose fault is it that the politicians who have allowed those corporations to continue keep getting re-elected?
If you must aim your vitriol at someone, let it be them, not those of us finding silver linings to appreciate in an effort to stay sane or happy.
silver linings? holy shit
nope lol i think i’m good with this particular ‘generalization.’ thank you for your comment which quite eloquently explains how you intellectualize mockery of low income and marginalized communities just for the sin of not having enough capital to engage in self defense against ultra wealthy corporate interests.
it’s a good look to aim vitriol at the 100% when only 55% voted for it. definitely not the exact ‘generalization’ you accuse me of. 🙄
“How dare democrats not have proper etiquette in the face of republican atrocities!”
This is what they call pearl-clutching. You’re making the exact mistake I predicted. Your takeaway should not be to hunt for ways you can find fault in the group you want to hate. Your takeaway should be to recognize that republicans are literally destroying the planet, and thus, your worth as a human being is directly proportionate to how strongly you oppose them.
But of course I don’t expect you to have the intellectual integrity to actually do that. It would be too hard, right?
yes it would absolutely be too hard. i prefer to view all human beings as having worth :) but that’s just because i’m a childish stupid woman with no clue about anything :/
does that sound like a people group that is being represented by its government to you?
be so very careful here. what you are doing has a name too. they call it victim blaming. you correctly identify a republican-led government, and in your mind pre-determine the forgone conclusion that the fault lies at the feet of every individual on the ground.
nevermind those pesky details like gerrymandering, redistricting, voter suppression, campaign finance laws, and rampant misinformation. none of that is real! it’s all the people’s fault, of course! what was that thing marie antoinette said? oh yes, let them move elsewhere /satire
none of this is to claim zero culpability for Floridian Republican voters; i do not intend or imply that any such individual is blameless.
i do intend to call out the prevalant and frightening blanket-statement attacks from “the left” that betray an extreme lack of political, class, and emotional awareness, of which yours is the most recent.
So, just for the record…
if Florida goes under the sea… they’re gonna have to go… elsewhere. maybe even a place near you. So. Something to think about.
correct… does the post imply otherwise?
confused because someone else was implying the downvotes were due to unclear wording
not really. I’m just saying, cheering for FLorida going under… means Florida man becomes Minnesota Man, and Texas Man, or 'Bama Man. or wherever.
okay yes you get it 😭
thank u!
all I’m gonna say is… if I see a neighbor walking a gator on a leash…
well I don’t know how I’d react.
we need to save the climate to keep our streets gator free!!
Well if they get rid of the Canada geese, they can stay,
Can’t be any worse than those hissing gangsters.
From Wikipedia: Climate change in Florida
Population vulnerability
Florida is a low-lying state and is estimated to be the state in the U.S. with the largest population and proportion of population living in the low-elevation coastal zone.[48] Sea level rise threatens to increase flooding. Of an estimated 590,000 people in South Florida vulnerable to sea level rise, it is estimated that 125,000 are socially vulnerable and 55,000 are medically vulnerable.[49]
A considerable proportion of Florida’s population has characteristics that may make them more vulnerable to health impacts or that may pose barriers to accessing healthcare; approximately 21.6% of Florida’s population is over the age of 65, 21.0% are foreign born, 12.7% live below the federal poverty level, and approximately 13.9% of the population does not have health insurance.[61]
Climate gentrification
Climate gentrification is increasing real estate values in parts of Miami that are at higher elevation, and decreasing values in lower-elevation areas.[68] By 2017, two poor black neighborhoods of Miami which are located on higher ground, Little Haiti and Liberty City, started becoming more attractive to investors.[69][68][70] Home prices appreciated more slowly in 2018 in Miami Beach and lower-lying areas of Miami-Dade County.[71]
I’ll miss the Keys.
:(
I’ll miss not having Floridians in my proximity.
