Hey folks!
This is a quick notice about a change to our moderation policy.
We have had a policy on lemm.ee for administration and federation nearly since the very beginning. This policy has also always included a section about moderator responsibilities. Today, we have made two changes to this policy:
- The policy has been renamed to Policy for administration, moderation, federation - this is to make it clear that the policy is also relevant for mods
- We have introduced a new responsibility for moderators, they must “Ensure that they only provide accurate and clear reasons for mod actions”.
The reason for the addition is that mod log actions federate out to other instances, and are more or less permanent (due to how Lemmy and federation works right now). This means that users do not really currently have any easy way to clarify or defend themselves against inaccurate accusations in the mod log.
As always, I am very grateful to all mods for your efforts in building awesome communities on lemm.ee. I hope you can understand why this new policy is necessary - I do not want to make your lives more difficult, the goal is to just try and reduce any mod log related misunderstandings in the future.
Thank you for reading and have a nice day!
That’s a good idea.
Yeah, it really is. Because modlog actions are federated and irreversible, mod logs are a form of speech that cannot be suppressed in any way. If you search up a user, you see what every mod on the whole fediverse has to say about them, and there’s no way to argue back. It’s the perfect tool for harassment and doxxing. One of the db0 admins even tried (and did a bad job) to dox me using the modlog.
You realize everyone can look up your three accounts in the modlog and see you’re lying, right?
Ooh ooh do me! (Spoiler: I shouldn’t be in any modlog because I’m not a twat).
/s (I’m not trying to be reported)
I wouldn’t have made a public comment about the issue if the db0 admin had done a good enough job at it that you’d be able to look it up. Then I’d be the one doing the doxxing, what with the Streisand effect. I told you the db0 admin did a bad job. But jumping straight to accusations of lying just because you didn’t pay attention? What’s your grudge against me?
RE: my other comment
Also, if I’m understanding the situation correctly, you heard that I got doxxed, went to go look for my private information, got upset when you couldn’t find it, and yelled at me about it? Why’s it so precious for you to want my private information? What’s with this harassment?
It’s called fact checking dingus.
I find it curious that your comment has 3 downvotes, and their comment has 3 upvotes, and that you mentioned they have 3 accounts. Vote manipulation perhaps?
I told you they did a bad job doxxing me. You didn’t fact check shit. You just tried to take a peek at someone else’s private information. There are privacy-respecting methods of fact checking that would actually work in this situation, and you didn’t use them.
One thing I did see in your modlog was a lot of removals and bans for toxicity and I’m starting to understand why.
Their Modlog was WILD xD
I’ve never been toxic on Lemmy, and I’ve never violated the rules of an instance or community I was commenting on. I do however have a disability I’ve been banned for, and I’ve espoused pro-trans political views that certain admins have taken issue with.
I actually got banned from startrek.website, the instance I’m leaving this comment from, for a while. They thought I was faking being trans. After a few months, it became clear I’m not faking, and they apologised and here I am.
1: Saying that this specific account is an Alt for Drones Rights is not doxxing, when you are being banned for Ban Evasion
2: Everything you put onto the internet is public info, dont put or say anything online that you dont want users to have access to
I’m quite open about being Drone Rights. I’ve never hidden it. Some people have tried to gotcha with “you’re drone rights”, and I said “yes… That’s obvious. I even moderate the community from this account.” But there’s another person who is closeted about their gender and has been accused of being me by an instance admin who claims to have access to secret logs that say we’re the same person. Given that I have faced massive amounts of harassment, abuse, and transphobia for being openly dronegender, and they are not open about their gender, you can see how I would not want them to be exposed to people like you.
Wait how do you check it?
If you scroll to the very bottom of the site, there is a link to the modlog. That is lemmy-wide (ie. everything federated) and you can filter by action and user.
You can also check community-specific modlogs from a button in the sidebar of whatever community.
Ty for heads up.
I am on kbin, gonna look around.
This is a good change, thanks.
Great work as always, will make sure to be concise as possible in the future with mod log reasonings, should I need to!
Cheers lemm.ee team.
Best instance continues to set the bar.
Good guy admin, good good instance 👍
Removed by mod
Lemmy is beginning to get overly moderated so I think being clear on why comments are getting deleted is a great way to avoid mod abuse.
I’m a big believer in freedom of speech and how ideas are changed through open and honest discourse for the betterment of mankind. It’s a true ideal of the internet and the world at whole.
I hope this instance remains as free an open as possible and avoids the mod abuse. Even if that brings us some discomfort.
I know support is usually quiet and complaints are voiced. As such I just wanted to voice my support. Thank you.
Thanks!
Can I have my community back, please?
Thank you!
Hey, so is abuse of the modlog by admins and mods on remote instances going to lead to defederation?
