I’m still steaming through a book a month on the little monster. Battery lasts forever, the screen reads great…
The ReLaunch rom for it is quite nice to work with, I can access my server with books using Total Commander and SSH, AlReader is quite adjustable (if not updated for Android 2.1 since forever, of course)… I even downloaded a couple of custom eReader fonts for it, Using Bookerly, now.
I just wish some apps were still updated for it. But then that’s the bleeding-edge software lover in me talking, it actually works fine and doesn’t need any updates.
I have a Nook First Edition and still use it occasionally.
I think that’s still a more modern device than the Simple Touch! Looks nice!
I had to stop using mine when I ignored it for about 6 months and came back and it couldn’t connect to wifi anymore because it needed a system update. I have had time to try to do anything with it through my desktop, so it just sits on my nightstand and does nothing. I got a new Nook since then (easier to buy something than fix something. Ugh.)
Ah, yes, that can be fixed by installing a custom mod on it, as I recall, but that does take some time to do, as you say. That is, I recall having that issue and fixing it somehow with help from XDA, but that’s about it.
I’m still rocking a kindle paperwhite 2 from 2013. Don’t even buy books on amazon anymore and the things still chugging along.
This is still such a solid device in 2023. Just finally gave up on mine that I bought clearance from a RadioShack in 2013 after a friend sat on it.
Even then the only problem was the backlight caught the screen imperfection in an irritating way.
Went with a Kobo Libra 2 to replace it, great little upgrade after ten years, but I could have seen myself doing another ten on the Nook
Had to retire my simple touch since the back rubber started to melt and get sticky. Replaced it with a current gen glow light I think is what they’re called now.
Still using mine as well. I used to browse Reddit and RSS feeds on it, but have gone back to just using it as an e-reader. I am planning to give that text game emulator a spin. I use ReLaunch, but I’m still on the system reader. How is AlReader? Is it worth the switch?
I really like it, it has a good bunch of configuration options which is something I always really appreciate.
I haven’t heard of this text game emulator, what is that?
It is called nookZax. According to the readme it re-implements the interpreter used on Zax hardware for text games. Honestly I need to look into more of this myself, as I’ve never dealt with software that old directly.
