So, any hype for the game?

I was planning to get it day 1, but may have to delay it couple of days (for some personal reasons). What about all of you? How many of you are getting it day 1?

I’m excited to play! The original still holds up great but this is a charming remake and a good way to introduce a new generation of players.

Link’s Awakening Switch was also $60 at release and I enjoyed that a lot. When I’m buying Nintendo I’ve already accepted that it’s not going to be cheap.

As someone who has never had a Nintendo console before Switch, I am really happy with the remakes and remasters released.

Loved Link’s Awakening Remake, and from the reviews it seems Super Mario RPG is also a great remake.

I’m hoping it still has the same glitch for you. Can continue to get the star over and over again as long as you don’t save so you can level up really quick!

As someone who will not only love to play this, but also wants to encourage more of this in the future, I am very ok with paying full price. It’s not like it was any easier than making a game from scratch, and given the number of people saying they won’t be buying it, we can assume there was just as much risk as a new ip would have. So I don’t see why -not- full price.

Sure I’ve already played the game 5 times, but I was gonna keep doing that. And now it’ll be better the rest of the times.

Not sure I follow. How does having reference art, an already finished story, completed level designs, etc. not make it easier than starting from scratch?

They reworked and looked over all the existing content. And added lots of little changes here and there. They redid all the graphics, and added little changes here and there. They looked at all the mechanics, and added little changes here and there. If you don’t think going back into old code and either trying to add new code to it or rewriting it all from scratch in a modern style adds up to as much work as writing it in the first place… I mean there is a very good reason most companies don’t update something unless it was originally made to be updated and we’ll documented, or the original coder(s) are still on hand to dig back in and figure out what creative solutions to problems they had to figure out out how that crazy code even still ended up working… Believe me, it was just as much work as making the game the first time.

You more or less described what goes into making a game in general. They’d be doing that, plus all the work that goes into writing the story from scratch, designing characters from scratch, designing levels from scratch, etc.

There’s simply no way it’s same amount of work to remake a game as it is to make a similar one from scratch. It’s just basic logic.

Well the work in some areas was a bit lighter, but the work in many other areas was notably heavier. The newer graphics and sound would have taken much more man hours than the originals, even given the advance in tech tools over the time. Games used to be made alot faster with much smaller teams back then.

And all the polish and finishing work necessary to make sure the remake captures the same feel as the original despite being completely different fundamentally can’t be understated. When a game is made for the first time, it doesn’t have to be exactly one specific way. You have a reference to work from both originally and with a remake, but accuracy to the reference is much less demanding for an original game.

But if we’re talking about price, we’re comparing it with other, similar games made using today’s tools and engines.

And there’s simply no way it takes the same time to build that from scratch, than to build it using an existing game as a reference.

Yea I’ve been wanting this remake for a while and by all accounts it sounds like they did a really good job. I’ll be playing this tomorrow for sure. Hopefully someday we’ll get a proper sequel but at least for now we have this

Yeah, one of the common reasons to do a remake is to both guage and raise interest in a potential sequel, hopefully that was one of the reasons behind this one.

It was fun, but its not 60$ worth fun in my opinion. The new/revamped music is the best part in my opinion.

The original is probably my favorite console game of all time (mmmm…or tied with Paper Mario TTYD). I’ve purchased and downloaded, but won’t start playing until later tonight. I can’t wait.

What do people think of the new massive team attack? Does it mess with the balance too much? Is it easy to ignore if it does?

Other than one scripted one it makes you do as a tutorial when they become unlocked they’re optional, can keep it in your back pocket at 100% charge until you feel like manually hitting the trigger button

So, I didn’t read the reviews in-depth, as I prefer to go into games mostly blind, but some reviews mentioned, easy combat, and one in particular said new mechanics makes combat easy. I assume that’s the mechanic you are talking about.

As for how easy it is to ignore, no idea. But any attack should be voluntary I assume, shouldn’t force you to use an attack.

I pre-ordered it and it’s on its way, so it should arrive tomorrow. But I don’t know if I’m going to start playing it right away. I was pretty hyped when it was announced, but it feels like I haven’t had time to play what I was already playing before it was released 😅 I haven’t finished Mario Wonder yet, and I’ve been playing all sorts of different stuff lately. Maybe it hooks me right away! Based on the reviews it looks like it’s a great remake. We’ll see…

I was legitimately surprised at how well they handled it. Literally my only complaints are that they changed the pronunciation of some character names, like Rena was changed from “Reen-uh” “Rain-uh.” Dias seems to be called Diaz by some voice actors. And they changed Gyoro and Ururun’s names to…

            ugh…

            Creepy and Weepy…

And the voiced dialogue makes for some very “Inuyasha-Kagome” moments…

lol, Gyoro and Ururun sound much cooler than Creepy and Weepy.

Well, it’s a great day when the only complaints we have about a game is pronunciation of some character names.

Me and the gf played for a few hours. The modern music is nice, but eventually I went into the settings and changed it back to the classic music - around about the Forest Maze section.
