Long ago (mid-90s) I had a coworker who was one of the last people alive who knew still how to program Cyborg, a 1970s-era programming/database platform that was still a legacy platform for a lot of companies. His job entailed making very small changes to the codebase and then waiting literally hours (sometimes days) for the shit to compile. He ended up being able to work from home for three different companies concurrently, making $300 an hour from each company. $7200 per day for about 15 minutes of actual work - while living in rural Texas.

Nothing in modern software design blows my mind more than the tendency to replace line-wrapping with truncation and ellipses. It’s like designers couldn’t get to sleep at night if there were any possibility of their layouts being variable height.

It’s not that shitty, maybe. In the district where I work, we get $31 an hour (for about 5 hours a day), health insurance (the main reason I do it) and eventually a small pension. The break in the middle of the day is great since I can go for a bike ride and have lunch and a long nap, and I can take my elderly parents to doctors’ appointments as necessary. In other districts it does suck though, since the pay can be much less (more like $18-22 an hour) with no benefits.

Lol premiums are literally their entire source of revenue. The CEO of an enormous publicly-traded company had a focus on keeping revenue as low as possible? If this were actually true, the people most likely to have killed him would be everybody on the board and everybody else in the c-suite.

There was a movie called Inside Job or Inside Man or something like that, where the lead organizes a bank robbery where he ends up secreting himself in a hidden room inside the bank itself, and then emerging with the cash a week later and strolling out. It would be pretty hilarious if this guy hid himself in Manhattan in similar fashion and then emerged into this lookalike contest to make his escape.

I actually really like short-format videos for recipes so you don’t have to watch somebody chopping onions for ten minutes. Also, Ronaldo highlights set to Brazilian phonk are kinda cool. Other than that, the format seems pretty worthless.
