I guarantee you Ransom isn’t in the Book of Mormon 🙂
Nothing prevents you from going by any name of your choosing in your daily life without necessarily having your name legally changed. Plenty of trans people do that.
In many countries, it’s difficult and often very costly to change one’s name. I know in France for example, you have to prove in court that it’s a handicap in your daily life, like if your parents gave you a legal first name that resulted in something really egregious when spelled out with your last name.
The best unique name by far is this one: Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow.
I once worked with this guy, who now inserts a H between his first and last name, probably because the “joke” has gotten old for him decades ago.
I would have sued my parents in his place.
Indeed. Normally I pity fhe kids whose parents give them stupid names because they have to carry the burden for the rest of their lives. But ultra-billionnaires’ offsprings who are born with a silver spoon in their mouth and zero obligation to work for anything in life don’t exactly elicit sympathy in me.
Elon Musk’s 7th and 8th offsprings take the cake: X Æ A-Xii (pronounced “X Ash A Twelve”) and Exa Dark Sideræl (nicknamed “Y”). Stupid rich people will do stupid rich people shit because they’re not like the rest of us…
I am just curious and want to understand how things work which no one else does.
It depends on how interested you are in a subject. Everything is interesting, but you may not find everything equally interesting, nor do you have time to know everything there is to know about everything.
For instance, if I fly somewhere, I have a general idea of how wings create lift. But if you try to explain it to me in detail, I’ll tell you to piss off because all I really want to do is travel from A to B.
But I know plenty about other subjects that I’m really into, that I could bore you to tears with and you’d end up punching me in the face if I tried to explain them to you.
It’s not okay to not know anything about something. But it’s okay to know enough.
I’m really disappointed with Lemmy’s idea of federation: all it is is a bunch of servers mirroring one another, but the user accounts are server-bound. No jumping instance and taking your identity seamlessly with you.
The stock Fairphone runs the stock full-blown Google spyware stack. Privacy isn’t Fairphone’s selling point: it’s repairability.
You can install CalyxOS very easily on it however. That’s what I’m rocking on my Fairphone 4, and it’s great. I have no issues with it.

Also, if you have to type that, don’t use the numpad: / is only one key away from *. If you finger snags the / key on its way to * and you happen to be root, your root partition will go bye-bye.
You know who else disavowed what he wrote publicly to pacify his critics? Hitler with Mein Kampf. He kept repeating he wrote Mein Kampf in 1925 but had changed his views since. Guess what: he hadn’t.
And surprise-surprise, the Orange Utan hasn’t either. It’s almost like we didn’t see that one coming from a mile away…
And don’t think for a second that I’m the only one to see the striking parallel.
Not patronizing Reddit and instead spend quality time trying to make Lemmy better.
I never thought of doing that in 40 years. It’s a great idea actually. Thanks!
Here’s a rule I learned the hard way a few decades ago:
There should be no need to pile on. Any one of those things would have been disqualifying in times past. Clinton almost got impeached over a blowjob. But Trump and all the things he said and done over the past 9 years is somehow okay. The mind boggles.
A post in all caps isn’t doing the work you think it’s doing.
I had no illusion in 2016. In fact, I had no illusion back in 2002 when I left the US and gave up my citizenship after Dubya was elected and signed the USA Patriot Act into law after 9/11. America is hosed and has been officially on the path to idiocracy and fascism since then.
It’s just that a 3rd round of millions of Trump votes should confirm it without the shadow of a doubt to even the most wide-eyed believers in American exceptionalism. America today is the 1933 Germany of our time.
I can do one dollar’s worth of anything GUARANTEED?
That one’s easy: I’ll buy a fraction of a winning lottery ticket.
