  • My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy A32, the last in the A3x line that has one. It’s really nice to have a headphone jack because… well, you plug your pair in, and it just works. You don’t have to worry about Bluetooth connections, or another battery that will die one day that you constantly have to recharge. Also, you get FM radio functionality on your phone, which isn’t really useful, but it’s pretty fun to mess with. I’m surprised Apple never had it on the iPod Touch despite the Nano and Classic both having it (some with a special accessory that unlocks the feature, some have it built in).

Also, support for my phone ends on Android 13 (One UI 5.1), meaning if I want new features (or even emoji updates), I have to get a newer phone, and that means either getting a lower tier model to keep that headphone jack at the cost of performance, or getting the same tier (or higher) at the cost of the jack. And I was never convinced by other Android phone manufacturers either, especially since companies like OnePlus don’t sell their products in my country, so my options are either Samsung, Google, or a whole bunch of Chinese companies, many have really terrible skins of Android. Either that or I get an iPhone, and none of the ones that are currently supported have the headphone jack. So I guess I’m sticking with my A32 until the day it nukes itself.

  • “Dammit, my tape is stuck inside the VCR again!”

“99 cents for a song? Hell yeah. I’m never buying CDs again.” (A reference to the iTunes Music Store launch)

“I ran out of free AOL time. Better get another demo disc”

Speaking of AOL, “yo, what’s your AIM screenname?” (Replace “AIM” with your favorite messaging service at the time if you used that)

“Mom, can I have a PlayStation 2? -No. -But it plays DVDs.”

“Oh, I can’t wait to see the wonderful New York Twin Towers, I’m so excited for what’s coming!” (I was too young to even remember the concept of different countries existing so I had no idea what “America” even was, let alone being confused about 9/11)

“I got slimed. It was so. Much. Fun.”

“I’m so glad the United Kingdom won Eurovision, I can’t wait to see how the next year’s contest will turn out. Katrina was so amazing” (1997 was the last time the UK won)

“What a wonderful Saturday morning. Time to watch some cartoons.”

“My phone has a NiCd battery, and it’s almost out of juice so I can’t just plug it in because I will ruin the battery. I have to wait until it literally turns off.”

“Belgrade is the capital of Yugoslavia”

“Finally got my fresh new copy of Mac OS X. Time to see what’s it’s like.” proceeds to stay on OS 9 for a few more years

That’s all I can think of.

  • They literally acquired the Alien Blue client, which at the time was the best Reddit client according to many people, and used it as the base for their official client. How on earth did they fuck it up this badly??

I never used Apollo since I was stuck on Android. But I still wish I had the chance to use it while it was available.

  • I have a very similar experience, I only left because I noticed just how awful the website has turned by the time the API fiasco happened, and I was definitely getting a bit addicted to the website so leaving essentially made me combat this addiction. I haven’t logged into Lemmy for over a month. Yeah, it has definitely helped me cut down on social media usage.

  • Given that this website has experienced the Reddit migration (I am one of those migrants), it has definitely started to feel a bit like Reddit, but it still differs in a lot of ways. There’s less bots, actually engaging conversations, actual content. To me, this website continues to capture the vibe of the early Web2 days of the internet in a way that Reddit clearly moved away from, definitely so that its executives can make more of them monies. It feels a bit nostalgic in a way, and that’s what I like about this website.
