This was pretty much assumed to be dead in the water after Gaetz resigned. It could have been, but the fact that the Republican-majority house committee isn’t 100% jumping at the opportunity to sweep things under the rug is a thing that’s happening. Maybe it won’t go all the way, but they are discussing. That’s a thing that’s happening.

Now, if it were one of those “(person) should do something” or “(committee) could do this thing that’s in their power on paper but totally in the author’s imagination in practice” things, sure. But you’ve got people talking about releasing a report on someone arguably not in their jurisdiction. That’s something.

While Google has been circling down the toilet lately, if you at least try searching for what you want, and use half a brain to think about what you’re looking at, it’s not exactly super difficult. I have to Google similar stuff for work sometimes, and .gov is pretty much a sure thing that you’re getting a government source, which is pretty good when you’re looking for a government’s laws. I also get different major colleges, which is just as good. Especially since you’re reading legalese, not commentary on the law or whatever.

This is exactly why the OP exists! My state has been solid blue for a decade now. I trust my senators not to vote to confirm AG Gaetz, but they NEED a few Republicans to join them. It looks like Collins and Murkowski have come out against him. We need a few more, and OP is saying that calling is one of the few things that may influence them. Certainly more likely than bitching on Lemmy.

The one tradeoff to having Democrats representing me in Congress (both house district and Senate) is that I don’t have anyone to call over stuff like this because they’re already on my side… Although for some reason my governor (who has been awesome otherwise) has been praising RFK for HHS, so maybe I’ll need to call his office and my senators about that one. Anyway, PLEASE don’t fall into the opposite trap and give his office a call!

If “has an owner” is what everything hinges on, and the Department of Corrections or whoever has full custody and control doesn’t count, fine. It can be called slavery while still being permissible under the constitution. It’s not illegal slavery, just like pre-civil war slavery in the south wasn’t illegal… But it’s still slavery.

Honestly, that’s just it. You’ll get people on the right using hyped rhetoric about “the left”, “liberals”, “leftists” and other synonyms that can be used to describe anyone from Hillary Clinton to AOC and beyond. Are there people (particularly in the “and beyond” category) that an average person may be concerned with? Sure. Are they clearly explaining that they don’t mean half the country? Absolutely not.

Oh no, I wasn’t trying to disprove your point at all! Just showing how extreme the situation needs to be to justify a suit. From what I remember most of the guests didn’t wear a suit either, but I can totally see it being a thing on the east coast.

Also Colorado. Granted, covid didn’t give me much opportunity here but I wore a suit this summer for the first time in about 5 years. It was a wedding and I was the officiant 🙃

Assuming not-Montana US, you can be fired for any reason other than membership in a protected class (race, religion, etc). Attending an ice cream social, even a company one, is not a protected class.

Organize for what, exactly? A big reason he shouldn’t be in office is because he incited an insurrection on January 6 to overturn an election. Any kind of organization to prevent him taking office would also be an attempt to overturn an election.

If you have a different goal in mind, I’m all ears. But I’ve been crying that democracy and elections are sacred and I’ll be damned if I’m going to change my mind because it’s gone the other way.
