I commented elsewhere that I wondered if they believe he’s innocent. If they truly believe this is a miscarriage of justice could these letters be written with his appeal in mind? There’s no physical evidence as I understand, maybe they’re going for the “this guy is so sober he wouldn’t even know how to get drugs” angle? I’m just talking out of my arse now but I’m so confused by the level of support for him I can’t help but clutch at straws to try to explain it.

I wondered if it was a “presented without comment” kinda thing? Shade on everyone without explicit condemnation? Maybe the writer was told to write a sympathetic piece and just couldn’t bring themselves to? The more I type the more wishful I realise this thinking is… 😕

No, but I have to say I’m surprised by the non-family members writing letters of character after he had been convicted of forcible rape. It’s one thing if it’s family I guess, or if the accused had been in the throes of addiction or similar at the time and had changed. But these are people who were working with him at the time he committed these crimes and they’re all testifying about him being such a good example of sobre living and a positive influence. Do they not feel betrayed by him? Do they not believe he did it? It’s strange.

I was thinking more along the lines of a large proportion of locals must work in the tourist industry - whether that’s owning hotels, working in them, owning touristy shops, tour guides, surf instructors etc etc. The locals haven’t just suffered loss of life, property and sites of historic importance, a lot of them will lose their jobs without tourism. “Economy” was the wrong term I guess. People need those jobs not just to live but to rebuild their lives and their property.

Do rugby players suffer concussions as frequently as American football players? If they don’t, could the helmets be making the problem worse - encouraging players to hit with their heads more, like a false sense of security? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don’t know anything about American football and not much more about rugby!

EDIT: it seems like rugby players are more prone to concussions than NFL players, but I might not be completely off the mark about helmets offering a false sense of protection:

Tourism will play a huge part in helping the community recover economically too. They’re going to need tourists to stay/come back asap. I thought the Greek president was canny to offer tourists affected by the wildfires in Rhodes a free holiday next year.

I think you’d call that gorgeous little bunch a posy rather than a bouquet. More simplistic, smaller, shorter stems, often wildflowers with an informal arrangement. Far superior imo!

Thank you for your input. As stated in the sidebar, discussion is welcome but arguments are not. I consider arguments to contain a measure of aggression or unpleasantness, unlike discussion and debate which remain civil. You are allowed to disagree and correct misinformation.

I took exception with OPs comment because they weren’t replying to anyone or engaging in a discussion or debate, they came straight out of the gate being extremely aggressive and unpleasant. However, I am aware that gun safety can be an emotive issue for some so I was lenient - I didn’t remove OPs comment or give them an official warning, I just reminded them to follow the rules. In OPs reply to me they were still passionate and seemed to disagree with me, but they weren’t aggressive about it and that is completely acceptable.

Lemmy.org’s citizen code of conduct is pretty clear on what behaviour is and isn’t expected. Here’s a few relevant snippets:

• Please be kind and courteous. There’s no need to be mean or rude.
• Respect that people have differences of opinion and that every design or implementation choice carries a trade-off and numerous costs. There is seldom a right answer.
• Please keep unstructured critique to a minimum.

I think people underestimate how “strict” the rules are on lemmy, and as a lone moderator it is really difficult to decide when to step in. The 82nd airborne division is the primary fighting arm of the airborne corps. As squad leader I imagine it’s highly likely that he’s seen combat at one time or another. And as he said, he’s worked on film sets in an advisory capacity before.

I thought they were coming at me a bit hard, they just wanted to argue with (and insult) me about anything they could. But tbh I can be a bit sensitive so I held off banning them for longer than I might have done if another user reported them for the same thing. Thank you for the reassurance that I wasn’t being reactionary because my feelings were hurt.

I don’t know what I’m missing but I can’t see options to delete/ban while browsing. I usually browse from IOS apps and open lemmy in my phone browser to mod but I used my laptop for this and still couldn’t see it. Also, I’m only given the option to ban for a set number of days, there’s no permaban option. Do I just put a high 4 digit number in?
